NJ Energy Savings
« on: February 28, 2013, 12:05:32 AM »
I've been saving a good chunk of money by using systrumenergy instead of PSEG, but they don't offer any rewards for customer referrals. Anybody come across a company with integrity like systrumenergy that offers good rates but also provides customer referral rewards (and if you're an Ambit Sales consultant, don't even bother suggesting them, I did not have a good experience with them)

Care to elaborate?

What rate is systrumenergy offering?

Save has been a bit under 10% on fuel (you still have to pay regular charges to PSEG for brinig the power to you)

Wow! I had a similar experience with Dominion, and cancelled them just yesterday.

Ambit has a 3% savings guarantee less than Jcp&l and NJNG.

What makes something unjustifiable? When you have a variable rate it can only be based upon the spot market since they are unable to hedge for you because you may leave. In January the spot market shot up due to the cold spells sometimes reaching close to $1.00/kWh. Other than in a little bit of residential in JCPL (now 0.0929 for 12 months) I only deal with commercial customers, but I will ALWAYS recommend fixed prices for electricity in NJ (except for maybe VERY large rate classes). When the utility price is mainly fixed there is way too much risk in a variable rate. This type of thing has happened many times with variable rates.
3% savings isn't much either BTW.

As an aside, I don't recommend that residential customers in NJ switch suppliers for gas. The utilities give credits every now and then which you will not get if you are with a supplier. Losing this sometimes substantial credit will wipe out any savings by a long shot.

Was going to add this in to the earlier post but it  is not letting me edit...
The average day ahead price for PSEG through January on the energy market was $184.41090/mWh or .18441090/kWh once you add 7% tax to it that becomes .1973.... before adding any other components like capacity, transmission, ancillary, and of course operating margin and profit. Any unhedged supplier which charges less is taking a loss.

Because if the going rate was .09 cents per kWh.... I don't care what kind of research u do/did... There is no way in hell it went up to 27.59 cents per kWh.... A triple fold increase! Market rates fluctuate I get that but there is no way that it was that much! A 300% increase!

I called Systrum & was told PSEG's drop in gas price was for 2 month's (some 2 month regulatory credit), so next billing cycle should reflect a more accurate picture. If Systrum is still more expensive on next bill, I'll drop them for gas but keep them for electricity as they're still cheaper than PSEG for several months

It will be lower than the gas price after the credit ends, but these credits happen regularly. What difference does it make if the reason you pay more is because of a credit our not. The fact is that you paid more. This is why I recommend against switching to a supplier for gas in NJ. The gains from the savings are small and the risk from listing the credit is high.

Apparently you haven't seen your January bill yet.... Expect a 200-300% increase over your December charges for electric

Whats the reasoning that monsey would see such a massive increase vs con Edison in NYC? Why couldn't monsey buy from the same producer as NYC gets it from for example? And to start with, even before the increase, why is Monsey so much more? Thanks

It's complicated, but the short answer is transmission constraints. At most times they will be lower and therefore the increase was much higher, but once things get tight they are stuck with NYC pulling one way and New England the other.
As a heads up, Monsey is most likely headed towards much larger long term increases when their capacity zone combines with NYC. This will mean that they will pay the same capacity charges as NYC. Its long and complicated so if you want to see more about that you will need to google it.
