Renting Motor Home
« on: June 19, 2010, 10:56:30 PM »
Anyone have any experience renting a motor home from let's say Cruise America? Thinking of flying to SFO with wife and 6 kids, spending 2 days there. Then renting a 30 foot RV and driving to Yosemite for 2-3 days and then dropping off in LA. Hotels in national parks are a fortune in summer. Especially with the little ones. This would make it much more affordable. I know the kids would love it. Just wondering if the parents would survive. Any experiences would be appreciated.

I've never rented, but take fuel expenses into account when budgeting.

Dont know but if you do, please make a trip posting - love to know how it went, and specifically, how to get a good deal at cruise america(discounts, and such). FYI there may be smaller companies out there that have better deals...

you could stay in bass lake about a 40 min away by car and there is very affordible lodging there. also there is oakhurst, ca which is a few miles from bass lake and there are stores there that have a semi kosher section

This is a picture of the RV that I spent 5 weeks living in while driving across Australia (from coast to coast).
We were 3 guys and it was fine. But then again, the way bochurim do things isn't always for everyone.  ;D

Nice!
Funny thing is, I was also in one of these things for five weeks in Australia. Only thing is, the RV they supplied for me was a lot uglier than this one.

Actually, it is thanks to me and my friend that you are driving in an RV like that, we destroyed the previous one by flipping it over. But that's a story for a different time.

I've never rented, but take fuel expenses into account when budgeting.

With AAA rate and some advance planning, you can average aroung $120 a day. Remember that includes your car in your budget as well. If you have a family with 5-6 kids staying in a national park, anyways you would need a car and the pricing is astronomical for lodging. And you'll be lucky if you get a bathroom at the end of the hall.

what exactly did you have to do for chabad on your trip? did you have to set up tefillin booths, or was it just to drive with the message on the side? btw what happened to all my stars?

We visited the small towns that don't have Jewish communities per se (no rabbi, Shul etc.). There we would meet up with the Jewish people and speak to them about Yiddishkeit, offer them to put on on tefillin, put up a mezuzah etc.
If you want to read more about the program see Chabad of rural and regional Australia.
