And on this topic, my netbook doesn't really play movies loud enough for me to hear on my headphones while flying. This appears to be a software limitation, since I know my headphones can play louder. So this is stupid, because why does the software limit the volume like that. There should be some patch I can download that will make the controls go louder. But I can't find such a thing by googling.
Sounds like that would be a limitation of your net books internal sound card. It probably isn't powerful enough to drive your headphones properly.
Which headphones do you have?

ipod headphones
iPod headphones are very low impedance headphones, meaning they are very easy to drive.
I think the combination of the weak netbook sound card and the external noise from the airplane is preventing you from hearing the headphones properly.
I would suggest getting a cheap pair of in ear headphones.
#1 They block out sound and lots of it. A decent pair can you give a 20-30db external noise reduction, which is almost equivalent to wearing a pair of earplugs.
#2 They sound at least 5 times better than iPod headphones.
#3 They are easily powered, which means you wont have any issues using them with your netbook.
I have had great experiences with this pair. $20 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HCFKNY/?tag=cl03f-20

For $299.99 I can take a guess as to how not every one flies with it.  ::)

Any way to get it any cheaper?

I use a Sony pair I got for $80. Its not the QC15s but work great nonetheless.

QC15's are overmarketed and overrated. You can do much better for $300.

I would lose my sanity without them.
If you fly any longhaul flights they're well worth the investment and they last forever.

Such as?

They're comfy and have great active+passive noise cancellation.
I sleep like a baby teenager in them.

In terms of noise cancellation, especially on airplanes, the QC 15's are actually pretty good. The active noise cancellation system is actually specifically tuned to cancel out airplane noise frequencies.

Where they are lacking is with the sound quality. An active noise cancellation system reduces ambient noise by pumping in additional frequencies which are the 180 degree opposite of the waveform that you trying to cancel out, making the whole frequency wave blend together and become inaudible. Being that the active system is introducing opposing frequencies to your ears, they are also canceling out frequencies which are part of the music/movie/whatever you are listening to. Active noise cancellation inherently reduces the sound quality of the headphones.

If you need active noise cancellation, 2 far better options in the passive/active over ear headphone market, are the AKG K490 $250 http://amzn.to/Z7tzve or ATH-ANC9 $300 http://amzn.to/YhWPnc. AKG and Audio Technica are both highly respected names in the high-end audio market. Both of these pairs offer far better sound quality than the QC 15's and can be used without the noise cancellation system, which means you can still use them if the battery dies. If I was buying an active system I would get the Audio Technica's.

The reviews seem to say that Bose are more comfortable and are better on airplanes.
I'm not such a audiophile that I need the best of the best in sound quality, I just enjoy not hearing the airplane drone and being able to comfortably listen to anything I want on a plane.

Isn't this true for all NC headphones?
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

If they work for you thats great. The Bose are certainly very comfortable and work well on airplanes.
My point is that for $300, you can do much better.
IMO, the best combination of noise reduction and sound quality would be the the Etymotic ER 4 $280 http://amzn.to/Zj52qd.
In-ear headphones with noise isolation of 35-42db at any frequency(all passive), which is tops in the headphone market and excellent sound quality to boot.
Some people don't like in-ear headphones though.

Yes for all active noise cancellation headphones. The 2 linked pairs above just do a much better job than the Bose at sound reproduction in general as well as tuning the active noise cancellation system to reduce degradation in the audio signal.

Again, great for music, but I would never be able to sleep on a plane with those in my ears.
The Bose have enough padding that they don't bother me when sleeping.

For me the only purpose of these is for the benefit on a plane, I rarely use them otherwise.
