Chase Freedom Miles and United Miles
« on: March 19, 2013, 01:08:27 PM »
I dont get to travel as much but earn miles with my Chase Freedom and Sapphire cards. I have a United account and have transferred the miles there and sold them for cash at .17 cents a mile or point. The cash is great but does anyone have any better suggestions for either a better return on the points or a better way to use them?

Assuming he means 1.7 cents (or $0.017)
If you don't care why would you comment?

Once you're selling don't transfer them to United, You're devaluating them! Dan says Chase UR points have a value of at least 1.9 cpp. Now unless you're booking a first/business class international ticket you won't be getting that kind of value for your United miles, and last time i checked United miles sell for avg 1.45 cpp and UR sell for avg 1.85 cpp!
Common sense...isn't so common.

Depends on the amount of United, but yes it'll be less than UR.

That being said, you don't need to be flying international J/F to clear the 1.9 threshold.  A simple coach ticket can often clear it, especially last-minute or without a Sat night stay.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

In the end, you need to decide if you value the cash higher, or the future travel.
If you have an idea of potential travel plans, then you can decide which is more worthwhile. Booking the travel w/ miles + fees, or paying cash and receiving miles for the flight and cc spend.

Ultimately, the decision is different for every person.

So if I wanted the cash with the UR points what are my best options for 1.9 cents a point?

You would need to sell them, but that can't be done on DDF.
If your only goal is to monetize, a better option would be 2% cb for ongoing spend (ie, not category bonus's or meeting min spend.)

Even more due to extra cb on top. Comes out to 2.25% I think.
Which means that when you use a cc for a regular purchase, you're effectively paying 2.25 per mile.

Not if you ONLY spend to meet thresholds.

In that case, no need for a cb card
