So you either have a switch that shut off the actual device, or it's not installed properly.  Check Device Manager.

Right, or the actual card died, I had that very recently on a clients machine, the wifi adapter simply died device manager didn't even show it and they opted on getting a new machine  ;D
If it's not free shipping it's not worth it.

Not exactly a "computer" question but didn't want to start a new thread...
Can you display video using peer-to-peer AirPlay to an Apple TV? A bunch of articles I read said that while you can mirror pictures or whatever else is in the iDevice screen, video requires both iDevice and Apple TV connect to a wifi network? Then I found this article that says even video can be displayed? Anyone have experience with this?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

It is still under warranty from Samsung (it's an 850 EVO) guess I'll send it in...
The warranty replacement SSD arrived from Samsung, I've tried setting up the SSD using the Manufacturers (HP) recovery thumb drive that was made specifically for this laptop and it has failed three times so far.

After installing the recovery partition, it says "software being installed", in the middle it reboots and then says "boot device not found. Please install an operating system" then I press alt+ctrl+delete and it reboots into windows and continues to install software, then when it is done it resets, and shows the "boot device not found screen" again. I press alt+ctrl+delete again and it resets and opens windows again and displays the message "the recovery attempt has failed".

The details are:

Any ideas?

Can you access the log?  Was the SSD even initialized?

I would suggest just clean installing Windows..

I initialized the SSD externally before putting it into the laptop.

I'll try making a windows 10 installation SD card. Apparently Win 8 laptops don't need product keys because they key it written into the bios. Will see how it goes...

Correct re:bios key (oem:dm)
SD card installation doesn't always work.. do you have regular usb flash drive?
maybe we should move to private chat.

I locked my laptop and when I tried to unlock it again I got a black screen. (I'm not even sure if it unlocked.) I was afraid I'll lose unsaved work, so I left it like that for an hour or so, but no change. I forced it shut by holding down the power button. Now when I turned it back on I'm having the same issue. Any leads?

Do you have an external screen to try?

My laptop has become very very sluggish. It's old but I think I should be able to handle what I'm doing on it better.  I've run SlimComputer and it's defrag and there is possibly a slight improvement.  What else can I do short of wiping clean?

ETA: Issue seems to mainly be the CPU maxing out.

The CPU is indeed pretty low-end.

The same place where you can see that it's the CPU that's maxing out, why not sorting an see what's the thing/s maxing it out? Maybe you would be able to pinpoint a specific culprit.

I assume you added extra ram yourself? I can't imagine a celeron shipping with 8 gb

At the moment Microsoft Edge Content Process is using 28% of CPU with one tab open,  though it's dropped by the time I finished typing this.

Thanks to both of you. BH it's up and working again. I guess I'll  put that info away in case it happens again. Hoping it doesn't, obviously...

With Process Explorer you can probably see the CPU usage on each specific service https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer
Is there a way to see a historical log of CPU usage? Mine has been freezing up and spiking to 99/100%, but it's hard to see what causes it since it usually goes back down after a few seconds.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

Yes there is, but it is not that easy to use it. See Mark Rossinovitch's latest Case of the Unexplained (2017) where he touch on it.
