It doesn't need to say anything. Standard computer graphics ports are to share the visuals to an external screen, not the other way around (to view visuals from an external source).

Would be helpful posting a link or model numbers for your CCTV setup.

Hi all.
i'm trying to download some footage from my CCTV (not IP based)
i don't have a monitor but my laptop (Dell Inspiron 15 i5559-3333SLV Signature Edition Laptop) has a port for HDMI but when i plug it in nothing happens.
can anyone please guide me?

You could most probably also use a DVD player, or connect it to your router and login from your laptop, depending on your DVR's specs.

Is there a data recovery program that would allow me to search my computer for a specific filename? I can't run data recovery on my whole computer (at least not using testdisk or photorec) since I don't have another drive big enough to hold all the files it recovers.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.

You can run the scan on the computer and choose specific files to recover..

With testdisk it can't even finish running the scan because it tells me that there's no room for the recovered "archive" or whatever they call it, on my external drive.

For a normal (15.6") laptop, I'd say go with a Dell or HP, not less than 8GB of RAM, and not lower than a current generation i5 processor. Expect to pay 500 and something (though you can find deals for cheaper.)

If you're willing to spend more (and you'll get better) than take it up from these all according to what you want to spend.

Better than Acer. Lenovo it depends which modals, but the entry level are usually not good.

Computer Troubleshooting/Help Master Thread
« Reply #4473 on: September 27, 2017, 02:14:42 PM »
Using a HP laptop, i7 relatively highly spec'd, it's about 3-4 years old, I've been checking the hard drive with windows diagnostics relatively frequently and always show up fine.

About a year ago I upgraded to a 1TB SSD and cloned the original HD onto it.

Last night it suddenly started completely freezing. First chrome started closing itself, then it started freezing completely.
I managed to run MWB which found a Trojan and quarantined it. An avast boot time scan showed nothing. I've been resetting it continuously trying to get into diagnostics before it freezes but now it won't even load.
It offered troubleshooting options while booting, I tried to reset windows without losing my files, it started running and then encountered a problem. I tried again and when I selected the restore without losing files option it didn't even start,  it just said that it couldn't run.

I rebooted again and now got a black screen saying "boot device not found. Please install an OS on your HD"

Any insight into what might be likely going on / suggestions about how to proceed?

All my work files are in Dropbox and will be fine b"ah but my wife has stuff on the HDD that she'll be very upset to lose.

First thing to try is to boot from something external (disk or flash drive)

Thanks!
I have a flash drive from the manufacturer, will booting from it erase the files on the hard drive? Or will I be able to keep them?

Booting from an external device does not change anything on your main hard drive. Just make sure (sure sure) not to press Install to reinstall Windows.

(preferably I'd boot from some Linux or so live OS with a GUI etc. But I don't know how proficient you are with stuff like that.)

Proficiency with loading something on a flash drive and get it to boot. You can even use Mini XP Windows from Hirens Boot CD.

What you'd want first is see if you can see the files on the main hard drive and if so try to copy it to some other device/drive.

Once that is done you can try to see if repairs or reinstallations help you.

Thank you so much again!!

I guess If I can get in I'll just try to move everything into Dropbox which should take care of that then I can try a clean install...
