I searched the forums and could not find a full comprehensive write up about this topic.

Clawback is a term used when you buy something, receive the miles for it,  return the item, and the bank takes back your miles.

This can also happen if you cancel you card right after you receive your sign-up bonus. 

Do different banks have different policies?

For example, I just got a chase ink bold, I don't have anything to spend 5k on. Can I spend the 5k and after receiving the bonus return all the items I spent it on? Will Chase take out my points?

If you have a freedom or other Chase card which has UR, you can probably transfer them into that account. Not sure if they will "reach in" and take them back though.

My experience has been that clawback on spending is standard, and on bonuses has never happened to me.

Iv'e had my freedom go into negative after a clawback from a 5 point category, I've also had a clawback on a refunded ticket on a citi thank you card.

it may be somewhat limited to specific items, But if I buy Costco online with your cc, and return in the store they will usually give cash or check ... As they do not accept mc and visa to refund u there.

Citi will not take back miles, they will not post any more miles until you reach the amount of the return.

This may be a good time to change the card to a non aa card and keep the miles....

IME Chase takes back points on regular returns.
Not sure about bonus points yet.
