You can't see how a larger nationwide fan base will be better for baseball?

The NFL does a lot of things right. It's time to start copying some of them.

I think speeding up the game and having a salary cap will help.

Maybe add IMHO to that. I don't know of any conclusive evidence that salary cap = larger national fan base.

Speed of the game is a huge factor. It's painful to go to a Yankees game

I was referrring to your first statement

I can certainly see that. I just don't think a salary cap will have such a significant effect on the size of MLB's nationwide fan base.

its even more when its a met game and dice-k is pitching!

personally its a lot more than a salary cap that will enhance the sport again! they need excitement among alot of other things as well. in general the sport has taken a turn for the worse.
If you have any questions please search and then ask. PM me for detailed help.

Well they lost "excitement" when they stopped turning a blind eye to PEDs...

It seems to me that it's more of a generational issue. Life had a slower pace back then, and baseball suited that well, so baseball was king. They can add things like a pitch clock and other tweaks to speed up the game, but at it's core baseball is just slower than the other major sports. And that may not be a good fit with the million mile an hour pace of people's lives today.

Have you ever looked at the time of play in old box scores?

This isn't (just) generational.  Games take far longer today than they did when baseball was our true national pastime.

Absolutely, they need to implement whatever rules they can come up with to help speed up the game (starting with a pitch clock of some sort). But it won't change the nature of the game, which lends itself to large amounts of dead time. If you edited the video of a full length game into just the balls put into play, it would be a very short video indeed. The game progresses due to outs, not to a game clock (the way all the other major sports work), and most outs aren't very exciting.

Bottom line is games used to be under 2 hours.
Then they bloated to 2.5 hours.
Now the average is 3 hours with games like last night with just 1 run taking 4 hours.

Next year will be even worse thanks to challenges.

MLB Rule 8.04 would solve most problems:

When the bases are unoccupied, the pitcher shall deliver the ball to the batter within 12 seconds after he receives the ball. Each time the pitcher delays the game by violating this rule, the umpire shall call "Ball." The 12-second timing starts when the pitcher is in possession of the ball and the batter is in the box, alert to the pitcher. The timing stops when the pitcher releases the ball.

Between that, speeding up breaks between innings, limiting pitching mound conferences, and speeding up pitching changes would go a long way.

Players are just better at milking the count. Any stats on pitch counts for the game? Too lazy to look them up.
Only on DDF does 24/6 mean 24/5/half/half

I couldn't find hard numbers on the NFL, just a few articles from the last few years making the essential point, which is that NFL games are getting longer and longer. Yet that doesn't seem to be hurting them at all. It's not just the length of the game overall, it's also the pace. The pitch clock helps for that too, but I still don't think it can overcome the core differences in the way baseball and other sports are played.
