Correction: the Prime Meridian (GMT) is exactly opposite the 180th Meridian. The International Date Line isn't straight like the Prime Meridian, it cuts around many of the pacific islands (e.g. Hawaii).

but isnt the time (hour) set based on GMT and from there its +1 or -1 , and not +1 from the IDL or -1 from the IDL? so really where ever the IDL is doesnt have any affect on what time it is just what day it is. Its just as the name says a Date Line not an Hour Line thats what GMT is all about setting the Time and not the Date

What's with all the nit-picking???
While SF may not be the most personable character, and do things to tick off alot of the members, this hating on him has gotten to be too much.  He basically is right; except for the cutting around land masses, its at the 180, a move that is also recognized in halacha.
Besides, he's European, he's bound to get on our nerves here. ;)

It's only fair to hold him to the same standard he holds others to.

Maybe if he's proven he isn't always right, he'll get off his high horse.

It wasn't a personal attack on SF, I was just clarifying, since it turned out that it was nogeyah to halacha

at least I didnt take it that way

but as I posted above the IDL has nothing to do with what time it is and only what day it is, so the IDL doesnt help no matter who's  view of where it is 1 follows. Now if theres such a thing as Jewish time (and I dont mean by showing up late or not starting on time) then thats something else, otherwise its GMT to figure out what time it is and thusly figure out the Zemanim

Thank you so much for backing me guys.

The dateline is basically straight, with a few detours not to burden the countries affected, and he same goes to the time zones.

China is a huge country which covers multiple time zones, nevertheless, whole of china is gmt+8.
Australia, is a different story, where they are over-machmir, and thus, you have cities, that don't just work with gmt+xt(hours), but: Perth gmt+8, Eucla gmt+8:45, Adelaide and Darwin gmt+9:30,Melbourne, Sydney, Hobart, Canberra and brisbane gmt+10, and finally Lord Howe gmt+10:30.

I always get a kick out of those with a 1/2 to them

and it wasnt a question of backing you or not, but just at times and especially in yur case its not always possible to get a proper feel for someone simply from any BB postings. As you know I myself didnt get you from get go either, but once we met it changed the way I viewed you and what you post or better put how you post

So sure enough on my flight someone was davening quite early, when I asked him later why (I know him a little) he answered that it was light outside. I proceeded to explain that according to many, we go according to the sunrise on the ground not in the air, and on a plane you will see the sun much earlier, his reply: I didn't think of that I did point out to him that bdieved he was definitely yotze since it was after alos.

I'm scheduled to fly ORD-PVG in December and I'm trying to figure out if I will have a chance to daven Shacris, and Mincha on the plane, i.e if I will not miss a "day" of davening.

From the research I've done it seems there is a good chance we will fly the Polar Route. That should mean that the plane encounters darkness, right?

Just for the record, some flights (SQ 1/2) can go either way around the world, so there might not be a way to know in advance.

True, but if it would take the Polar Route would it become night?

Just wondering, does it make a practical difference for you to know beforehand?  Or can you wait to just ask the flight crew?

I'm about to daven my fourth tefilla in a row on a plane. No sour looks yet.

Are you on SQ21?

PS, I heard the Satmar Rebbe Zt'l paskened, that you keep shabbos according to the local time & day, because the locals are there since... And they know which date is what.

It's a bit more complicated, because I'm traveling back to the US through Europe. So if I miss a halachic day on the way to China, I won't be able to make it up so I need to find out if that would be a problem. May need to change my flights around.
