I believe you can use wix for free but then they place advertisements on your site. If you don't want their advertisements then you gotta upgrade to a paid account. It's not too much but I'm not sure how it compares to godaddy.they also have several different account types to choose from.

If you use a paid wix account you will get a free domain name so no need for Godaddy

Wix is limited in many ways, if you look online you can find many nice WordPress themes that are cheap to buy and easy to install and customize

thanks for all the help

I am looking for a simple site for a local business .. i would like some web exposure.
If all he's looking for is web exposure you think he will be effected by wix's limitations? Are there wp themes that are as simple as wix to customize?

You need to be more specific. if it's just an informative website with no major design it will cost you by the number of pages you need created, but shouldn't be more than a few hundred $ even that may be too much

I'm reading through this thread and I'm not really sure what's going on, and what all these words mean. I want to start a website, I have an idea of a few products that I want to sell and I think I can be very successful. I'm just not sure where to start, I know how I'd like the site to look. What do I do now? Do I hire a graphic artists, an IT guy? How much would it cost to start it up?

Anyone have any suggestions on how to research this? Is there a ecommerce for dummies book? Seems like I could use it!

Being an "online" guru since 2006, I will give you my 0.02.

Driving customers to your website is VERY expensive, unless you have Zero competition and people actually search for your product. Otherwise start out with Amazon / ebay likes and build wealth. Once you have enough funds to invest start from the bottom up on your site. Hope this helps.

~15%

Your own site could cost you around 5k or less to have someone build, but is basically useless for sales as explained above.

Around 15%. But you have to remember that you will never drive as many people to your products as they can. Their worth is really higher than 15% IMHO.

For a new seller, eBay takes 10% and PayPal takes 2.9% + $0.30. Amazon takes different amounts based on the item category. They have a fee calculator if you want to check a specific item.
I've only sold 2 iPads on Amazon, but I've found that they take less than ebay and PayPal.

The 2nd column is my actual fee from Amazon. The last 3 columns are what eBay and PayPal would have charged.
The first item was non-FBA, the second was FBA.
ETA: I edited the post a bunch of times since I couldn't figure out how to show the numbers. It should be accurate now.
