Anyone have experience bringing food into Peru.
Salami? Meal Mart meals?
Any options once I am there?
I may be to late in my response but when we went we brought meal mart meals and a couple packages of salami.

Hi,
I am planning an August trip to Peru and would appreciate feedback/advice. This is the rough itinerary so far:

Sunday: NY > Lima -> Cusco  (Don't plan on spending time in Lima. That make sense?)
Monday & Tuesday: Sacred Valley
Wednesday & Thursday: Macchu Picchu. Planning on doing a 2 day/1 night Inca trail.
Friday: Macchu Picchu > Cusco
Shabbos: Cusco
Sunday: Cusco -> Amazon Basin
Monday & Tuesday: Amazon Basin
Wednesday: Cusco > NY

Looks like a nice trip. I agree with the skipping Lima.

Thanks for the reply. Any 'not to miss' sights or activities?
Also - Any hotels to recommend in Cusco for Shabbos? It's gotta be near Chabad

We had a great local tour guide in cusco who we found on TripAdvisor. Definitely use him.
Look him up.  I'll try to find his contacts

Is it reasonable to day trip from Cuzco or Ollantaytambo to MP in 1 full day, or do you have to spend night before in Ollantaytambo / AC to catch the bus? Also, any leads on how to get a good deal on the train tickets?

I've done MP twice and each time leave have left and returned the same day from Cuzco/Urubamba. You can take the first train in the morning or shoot for a ~noon arrival in AC and enter the park at 1pm in order to get 50% off the entrance price to MP.

Not typically any deals for the train tickets that I know of. There are sometimes 2 for 1 tickets out of Ollantaytambo during the middle of the day in off peak seasons.

Thanks for the tips. Heading out in May, not sure if considered peak or off-peak season. Do you have a link to the 50% off deal from 1pm? And is there a chance to be turned away due to the 2,500 limit per day at MP?

TY.

we did a day trip to MP from Ollan.  The elevation is a lot lower than Cusco so you wont get sick.
We then went to Cusco afterwards.  We did the Waynu Pichu hike too. Very strenuous.  You need to book it in advance 400 tickets per day.

Just booked a trip to Peru for June with my wife. We have been looking for a trip for a while but did not look at South America because of Zika but then realized because of the altitude there are no mosqitos.
Our plan
Motzei Shabbos: NYC-LIM overnight flight in business then soonest connection to cusco (currently booked at 4 PM due to limited award availability and 90 minute stopover required in system)
Sunday- arrive in Cusco and stay overnight in hotel there or sacred valley to avoid altitude
Monday AM- leave on 3 night 4 day Trek on Salkantay trail to Macchu Pichu (http://www.salkantaytrekking.com/pdf/salkantaytrek4days.pdf)
Return Thursday evening from Machu Pichu, stay in Cusco or Sacred Valley overnight
Friday early afternoon flight to Lima
Shabbos in Lima
Motzei Shabbos flight back to JFK

I have done treks before but my wife has never. I expect no interest from her in the idea of a trek with tents but she was convinced by the beauty to try it. Any suggestions or resources on how to handle food on the trek? I was planning on bringing a pot and pan and asking the cook to work with us on cooking what we approve.

Any other suggestions modifications?

Thanks for the help

Lima at sea level may have the risk of Zika you are trying to avoid. Why not stay in CUZ for Shabbos? There is a Shul and kosher there too. You can take flight out MS at 8ish to catch flight or leave on Sunday.

Latest LATAM flight seems to be 7:45pm which is cutting a little close.
