How to spend money at gas stations.
« on: July 11, 2013, 11:08:51 AM »
I have a Freedom card and two Discover cards that have gas stations as bonus categories this month. I usually get gas through buying gift cards 2*$50 and getting a $10 store gift card at a local Dave's. So, although I buy a lot of gas, 5% doesn't help much. Does anyone have ideas on how to spend?

If you get 5% back from Freedom or Discover, and 10% a different way, you don't need me to tell you to take the 10%.

+ You're probably getting the cash rate using GC's

Cash rate at Shell and BP. Also, BP gives 5 or 10 cents off per gallon every few fill ups. I'm still trying to figure out how by BP the cc rate was 3.75, cash was 3.65 and with BP GC I 3.55 (with no BP rewards available). This was on Coney Island Ave. I'll prob never find out if this is pattern as I usually fill up in OH, PA and NJ and very rarely in NY.

What about out of NY NJ, in OH maybe?

Also, I once heard a rumor that 7-11 may be counted as gas station, but I'd doubt it unless someone knows otherwise.

That is correct when they are selling gas.

what about going to shell with your freedom card at 5% back, buying a shell GC first, then using the Shell GC to pay to get the cash rate? would that work? if so, you'd end up with 5% back & the cash rate...

Yes, should work, and can also stock up close to end of quarter.
It just doesn't help as in previous post I stated that in OH we can get 10%. I was hoping to find non-gas gc ideas

don't know if I missed something, but.. Discover and Freedom specifically state to get the 5% you must use the card at the pump, not inside. If you buy a GC with a CC in the store, you only get the 1% from freedom and probably .5% from Discover!!  BYW, last year my dad filled up our truck (48 gallons ) at an R&S Strauss gas station in South Jersey and put the Freedom card into the CC machine that was attached to an old pump w/o a built in reader. When the bill came.. no 5%!!. I called and was told that the reader was not in the pump so it was considered no gas purchase, it was coded as a store purchase. Be careful. They wouldn't do anything.

Interesting that Chase doesn't know this rule.

Q. What types of merchants are in the Gas station category?
A.Gas station category
Merchants in the Gas station category sell automotive gasoline that can be paid for either at the pump or inside the station, and may or may not sell other goods or services at their location. Examples of merchants that sell types of fuel but are not included in the gas station category are truck stops, boat marinas, oil and propane distributors, and home heating companies.
