Not really needed.

Speaking from experience?

Wife did it. We only used a lawyer the first time to consult with and make sure all paperwork was in order. Though if you do it right, you won't even need that.

Okay, thanks. Do you remember if you had to send in any documents together with the form that you need to fill out (i.e. documents proving that you live together), or are those only needed if you end up having to go in for an interview? Also, do they do another biometrics scan this time around?

+1.

Don't remember what exactly was needed but it was very straightforward.

Regarding the biometrics, I believe once it's passed 18 months you need to redo it.

I would like to get a green card. im GB citizen and wife US. were currently in Israel. What is easier, to wait till i get into the US (not sure when that will be, and i wont be able to leave) or do it here?

You will be able to leave, by applying for an advance parole document.

Incidentally, can anyone here help me? I have an appointment for the interview next week. Officially if you entered the country with the intent to apply for citizenship, they don't give it to you. You have to have entered as a tourist or visitor. Who in their right mind would come here on vacation and then just decide to stay? Are they really that stupid? What should I tell them? Were any of you asked that question?

I assume you came here on vacation, fell in love with an american, and then decided to stay here.

i couldn't find a better thread so if i should start a new one, let me know:

if you only have a Green card (citizen for 25+ years), how far can it take you when flying? i'm assuming 50 states is fine but what about Canada, PR, US Virgin Islands? what about Bahamas, DR, Mexico, Bermuda, etc? if not, is it better to get a US Passport or a passport from Birth country (Australia)?

A family member just got a green card and there is this crazy history test you have to take to become a citizen... It seems that no-one bothers

Why not renew it at the consulate/embassy?

One can remain on the green card for life. The question is.how does he leave the country if the passport is expired? Also I thought you have to go every 5 years to renew the green card and for that I'm sure you need a valid passport. Not certain tho

There are many reasons to come to US not just vacation. If you're scared they'll ask, say that you came for a wedding (and have a copy of invitation to wedding). You could have come in to visit your wife's family. I guess it's best if a lawyer chimed in. I happened to be here on a student visa when applying, IIRC.

You can not travel internationally on a Green Card [ you should be able to travel to and form Puerto Rico and US virgin Islands, but I'm not 100%]

As which Passport is better is depends on where you are traveling to, and who those countries say need visas.

A family member just got a green card and there is this crazy history test you have to take to become a citizen... It seems that no-one bothers

The test isn't that hard. IMHO its about the level of the NYS US history regents + some current events

and many people do bother according to http://www.uscis.gov/archive/archive-news/naturalization-fact-sheet ~655k became  naturalized citizens in 2014. [you should assume that some people sat the test but did not become naturalized] There are study guides that take you though what you need to know.

here is a sample test https://my.uscis.gov/prep/test/civics see how hard it is your self
