CC machine read wrong info

Weird thing just happened to me.
Was shopping at a store with a Citi AA card and the card got declined, they attempted it 3 times.
Called Citi and was told that the CC machine at the store read the wrong expiration date all 3 times, then the rep. proceeded to unblock my account.
Anyone ever hear of this?
