Reformat DDF?
« on: October 15, 2013, 11:43:50 AM »
Some of the important and popular threads (especially in the credit card posts) get exceedingly long (150+ pages). Looking through them can be quite daunting even with a search option. Questions often get lost or repeated within a thread.
Do you think it's time to start subcategories within each large topic (eg obtaining SW points and spending SW points as subcategories within the SW thread.)
Or maybe there is a way to group specific questions with their respective answers and filter out all the "+1"s. The wikis are definitely helpful but not entirely sufficient.

I don't know how it would work exactly but I guess that can be discussed here.
Thoughts?

As a thought, whenever someone starts a new thread, instead of everyone (read: specific users) attacking them to tack it onto an existing mammoth thread, it can be made into a new thread within that category. If it's an obvious repeat question than it can be linked to the answer instead of being asked again.

The wiki could have links that would get you to specific pages in the thread where specific points are discussed

I was thinking the same thing recently but in a little different format. Say we don't allow new topics at all in CC and a couple other topics and we delete all threads and have people write up Wikis on each cradit card bluebird ap etc. out there in its own file etc. And then each airline etc. This is just a basic idea but u probably get the gist.

Maybe we could get a thanks button, like XDA for example, and thus avoid all the +1's.

Agree. Very difficult to read through a lot of these threads looking for relevant info.

Or make a new rule no plus 1 unless you have something more to add

My two cents.
On the help find mileage tickets thread, I was thinking that alot of the questions are just asking which currency to use, NOT availability.
So most of that info could be wiki'ed, to avoid alot of unnecessary repeat posts.

Sometimes plus one is adding by saying I also think that is a great thing to do. It tells the OP to give it more serious consideration.

Problem is, who can decide what is important. Lots of info from sone ppl's experience can help some other ppl even if you think its obvious or not frequently relevant.

not all +1's are equal. When Dan gives it, it means something. When a freshy does, not as much. Maybe only people who reach a certain level should be able to.

I belong to another forum that has a "like" button under each post...
It is enormously helpful because when someone sees a post with a lot of likes it will give credibility.
Sometimes noobies (or even seasoned veterans) unknowingly misinform people, but if there could be a way to like posts then we can be able to differentiate an accurate/useful post vs. a post with misinformation.

If you guys see an SMF plugin I'm happy to accommodate.
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

Disagree. Alot of times the +/- is about an experience, nothing to do with how much experience the person has per se, or what "expert level" he is.
For example, saying I did/didn't get an Amex Sync email and I did/didn't get credit. Or when your points posted. That is a simple fact/data point which often helps people, and yet wouldn't necessarily have any correlation with being a noob/veteran.

What would be ideal would be to split up these two types of thumbs up, I.E, opinion vs. data point. But then again if your following the thread, I guess its pretty self explanatory which one it is..

All you gotta do is find somebody to do it...
It doesn't have to happen overnight. It can be built post by post, answer by answer.
Give it a few months and you'll have a petty powerful tool.

Or at least for those of us that don't know all 18 charts baal peh anyway. :P
