Topic Wiki

I would like to have had the following summary when I was looking for my answers. Since I only read the end of the thread, please add other pertinent information.

Best AntiVirus Software
Neither interferes with K9 now.  Do not have more than one antivirus running at a time.
Free - Avast           download here
Paid - Kaspersky

Best Free Spyware
ublock                    download here for FireFox

Firewalls
Windows Firewall should be ON at all times unless your antivirus software comes with one.
If so, it will probably shut off Windows Firewall on its own.

Before following the information contained here, check the date at the bottom to make sure this wiki is relatively up to date.

Please (not just you, as a general suggestion and read this threads wiki...) be descriptive when you write a problem, so people could even attempt helping you. No one could know what "does some weird stuff" means, describe what those weird stuff are.
You're right. I wrote the post in a bit of a hurry. To be more specific, pages are taking rrrrreeeeaaaaalllllyyyyy long to load (as in minutes, sometimes). Very often I try to open a page and I get some type of PAGE NOT LOADING - SSL ERROR, I can't recall the exact wording as I'm not by that computer now. I also found another quirk that I've never experienced before. Sometimes when I type into the search field on Google's home search page it'll just reset and empty whatever I typed in already. This is extremely annoying when I have to type longer phrases, and just about when I'm ready to hit "enter" the field clears. >:( I also find that Google search's autofill feature is less responsive. Thanks in advance!

Your best bet would be to contact Gentech first. The SSL error might be that they need to install their certificate (in Firefox most certainly). After that you can see if it's still that bad.

PSA:

If you have Avast antivirus and it pops up every two seconds a Threat Blocked for Google URLs. It is nothing wrong with your PC and everything wrong with Avast...

https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=199217.msg1379496#new

For now, you can disable the Web Sheild (temporarily. Do like Until Restart)

Okay. It's fixed, just update the definitions if it shows up:

Avast note
Hi everyone,
This was a false positive that was live for around 30 min, between 5:15am and 5:45am CET (GMT +1). We just disabled it and pushed the fix through streaming updates.

I've been happy with norton 360 for a number of years.
Any reason to change from norton?

If you are happy with Norton I don't think you shall switch. Norton is one of the top performers in antivirus tests and is recommended by a lot.

That said, if you were on the market for an antivirus without having anything until now I'd advise for Kaspersky Internet Security, which is even higher in some ratings (also it is available for pretty cheap on sale usually.)

Just a note:
Although Kaspersky is probably the best out there, it is resource-heavy.  Keep that in mind..
(P.S. You can try trial first)

Now I am in Greece---My current Norton 360 expired today --Bought Norton from Amazon in USA in preparation
I tried to install it on my computers in Greece  - blocked! because Norton has region coded it- Amazon gave me a full refund

Tried to but from Norton Greek website but the will not accept a U S credit card ( on pull down they list many countries but not America ) it requires a credit card from almost any E.U. Europe or almost anyplace in the world

Spoke to Norton and no workaround asked if change my billing address on c.c. to Greece will that work --told NO as it will still show as a US  C.C.  --ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS HOW SOLVE

now I have win defender on

Any FAR deals on Kaspersky these days? Or anyone have an extra license?
I am sometimes accused of overthinking things. I am still mulling over whether that accusation has merit.

Anyone use 'Windows Defender'? is it a good Anti-Virus?
I'm actually a big fan of Microsoft Security Essentials (Windows Defender).
If I may ask, based on what is that? I've seen more than once Defender missing viruses that the mentioned antivirus software removed right away, and all independent antivirus test show the same. (see, for instance, here from AV-TEST which had Defender at the very lowest end of the lost in rating for protection!)
I'm still basing on Security Essentials which I thought was pretty strong. With the rollout of Windows 8 and the switch to Windows Defender I did see a degradation in quality especially not being able to schedule scans. For Windows 7 and below I stick with Security Essentials but I have considered switching to Emsisoft for 8 and above.
Workflowy. You won't know what you're missing until you try it.
