SIP users probably don't have to worry that much about this. There was a way before XMPP, and until Google changes the Voice API, there will be a way after it as well... How it used to be done: How to use Google Voice for free outgoing calls on an Asterisk/FreePBX system (the no-XMPP way) [iprock.com].
Keep in mind that the aforementioned method would require a SIP DID (which can easily be linked to a GV number) and a light Linux server, but that's a small compromise for what you're getting.
Since most (all?) Obihai devices can also connect to SIP accounts, the discontinuation of XMPP support doesn't necessarily mean you won't be able to use your device with GV -- it just means that it will be a little more difficult.

If you are switching from POTS to Obi or other voip services, in many states the old phone line will remain active for calling 911. You just leave your phone connected and they disabled outgoing calls at the phone company computers.

MagicJack/Nettalk/Ooma can be connected to the POTS line of this obi110 - look at obitalk forum for more info on this. (in theory these are next best to free GV)
For people want alternative to GV, here are some good quality and/or low price Voips. Some of those VoIP Services offer phone number in other countries also. Remember this is a standard SIP device so you are not tie to GV and any specific Voip.
