Violent Curriculum in Kindergarten
« on: November 22, 2013, 01:31:51 PM »
This is something that concerns me, please contribute if you feel the same way.

My daughter (3 yr old) comes home every week with a parsha sheet describing what they learnt that week.

Somewhat disturbingly, each one seems to be more gory and violence filled than the last.

I know the Torah recounts a pretty violent history but isn't three a bit young to be learning about Yosef's brother trying to kill him or Esav biting Yakov's neck?

I have my issues with this as well. Part of me feels that there is something to waiting when kids can have a better understanding of what you're actually telling them.

Is there an official reason why they are being taught this stuff instead of say, rainbow rubber band bracelets?

they taught all this to me and I turned out ok. :P

Honestly, one would hope that kids can understand contexts , as in eisav was the bad guy and was a murdererous rapist while yaakov was the tzadik that we should emulate.

'Everyone' turns out Ok. But it's great to always try to help turn kids out even better.
Some schools teach more violence and more 'adult' topics than others at a young age and I don't see it being helpful.

there is a concept that "Torah cannot cause harm."
This was the chazon ish's response when asked whether bochurim should learn kesubos. Btw some extreme chassidim won't let bochurim learn noshim at all!

It seems like everything related to sex is taboo but with violence it's A-OK

Everything can cause harm. There are plenty of stories in the Torah if told to young Children can cause some sort of harm.  But I have two separate concerns. 1. Harming a child. 2. Using the time to teach the most benefical things.

When you're teaching one who understands you're actually teaching them.   When you're teaching 2 and 3 year olds you're basically just having them mimicking things they don't understand back to you. And while that isn't ALWAYS a bad thing I appreciate being able to teach a kid a story for the first time when he understands and can take it in and really appreciate it at whatever level. But some of these younger kids can speil back the whole story and have no idea what they're saying.

It's just concerning and I'm not sure it's the most beneficial thing.

This sounds like the line where they ban the chumash because it contains women's names.

How would you go about explaining contexts like that to a two/three year old?

As little kids it's all just a story.  Some kids come home repeating the parsha like its current events.  Eventually when the pieces begin to sink in they'll have a better understanding of context.  But in the meantime they know who the good guys are. and hopefully the teacher is teaching age appropriate 'midah of the week' chumosh lessons as they go along.

Sure, show your three year old a cow being slaughtered. That should fix him/her good for a while.
