So here’s the lowdown:

NOAA is predicting a KP up to 7. That means that anything 52.2° magnetic north could possibly see the aurora overhead. Locations from 47.2° should see it on the horizon, with the display getting higher and higher overhead the more north you are.

The southern part of the Adirondacks  (Lake Pleasant area) is at about 52.25° - absolutely perfect. That night sky there has a Limiting Magnitude of 7.1-7.5, which is the second to darkest rating – again, perfect. Driving time from Brooklyn is 4:10.

There’s one location closer to the city with a decent LM, and that’s Pepacton Reservoir NW of Liberty in the Catskills. It’s a 2:45 drive from NY, but not only is it a low altitude, it’s also about 1-1.5° further south in latitude. That means that if (and it’s a big “if”) the KP 7 pans out, there may[i/] be something to see. If the KP is any lower, there probably won’t be anything much, while there may still be a chance up in the Adirondacks.

just as a means of comparison, what is the kp of north iceland where the northern lights are fairly common? thanks

KP has nothing to do with how common it is; it has to do with how far south is goes. That means that in Iceland even a KP of 1 could be amazing.

As far as I could tell, once per 1 year or so.

Also remember that we're at year 10 of the 11-year solar maximum cycle, so there's only this winter and next where there's a chance of this happening (under normal circumstances). After this it'll be another 11 year wait.
ok, so I'm 99% in.  (I pretty much have the ok but I'm getting the guilt laid on thick and heavy  :( )

I'll probably want to "borrow" a lens for this. Would a 50mm f1.4 be the ideal one for this?

Good luck ;) ;D

The 50 is definitely not the ideal lens for this. You want FAR wider. A 14 2.8 or 24 1.4 would best (and quite expensive :'().

In a pinch the 18-55 could work, but it won't be best.

You may want to have a look at the Samyang/Bower/Rokinon 14 f/2.8.

I wouldn't rent for something which has such a big chance of bring cancelled due to the slightest change in weather.

Costco doesn't sell lenses (AFAIK) and BB doesn't have the right ones in stock to pick up tomorrow...

Anything 24mm or wider and f/2.8 or faster would be perfect. No autofocus needed at all.
