Anything 24mm or wider and f/2.8 or faster would be perfect. No autofocus needed at all.
what kind of mount?
How would a 28mm f/2.8 be?

Your need an EF mount, unless you want to futz around with adapters.

The 28 2.8 is an FD mount, plus 28 acts like a 45mm on your camera - far too long. 24mm is pushing it already.

If you're looking at B&H already, why not get the Rokinon 14 2.8?

Because it's $400
If I got one of these cheap older ones I would keep it, I wasn't planning on "borrowing" it...

"Auroral activity will be high. Weather permitting, highly active auroral displays will be visible overhead from Inuvik, Yellowknife, Rankin and Igaluit to Juneau, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay and Sept-Iles, and visible low on the horizon from Seattle, Des Moines, Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, and Halifax."

So where do I go to see something low on the horizon? What time?
Save your time, I don't answer PM. Post it in the forum and a dedicated DDF'er will get back to you as soon as possible.

I see the Bower 14mm f/2.8 is only $300, but that's still outta my range right now.

I'm going to venture a guess, maybe drive into the mountains in PA?

Your best bet (without driving too far) is the Kendall Hills Parking Lot in Cuyahoga Valley NP. Look north.

Yes, if you're in the mood for a longer drive that's a good idea. Allegheny National Forest is your closest real dark area.

I wants planning on it. Only places would be in the city, and not schlepping there.
Still would need a tripod.
Remote shutter? Is that necessary...

To buy our borrow?

There's no real reason to borrow the Pentax over the Canon.
