Sim for the occasional us trip
« on: January 05, 2014, 01:49:58 AM »
What is the best sim card to get for someone living in Canada for occasional trips to the us, ranging from a few hours to a couple of weeks?

I know that in Toronto there's a provider called Mobilicity that offers pretty decent rates for talk and text in the US. Don't know exact details.

I believe t mobile has pay as you go that for $2/day activated automatically when you use it.

PTel is not a bad choice.  They use t-mobilie.
But there might be better choices
$5 for the sim
$35 for unlimited voice with limited data or
$1.50 a day for unlimited voice
or pay as you go for $10 for 60 days

It all depends how many minutes you use and how often

You might also consider not using you gsm phone and buying a used verizon phone. on ebay for next to nothing or getting one almost free at Electronics stores and department stores.

BestBuy often gives these things away for free or next to free.  Check there ads online.

Since I rarely use my cell phone, I chose the verizon option using pageplus since old verizon smartphones are worthless, so you can get an android phone for about $30 (which sold for $400 two years ago).

PagePlus charge 10 cents per minute.  You have to reload with $10 every 4 months and they charge you $.50 a month in usage fee.

So they charge me $6 a year for my cell phone and I pay them $30 a year to maintain the service.  So that could also be a good deal.  Ask your friends in the US if they have an old verizon phone and maybe you can get it for free or next to nothing.  But note the pre-paid verizon phones don't work with page-plus.  Make sure you have a phone that used to be on contract.
