How to cancell or tramsfer airline ticket

does anyone have any idea how to avoid a cancellation fee for cancelling a ticket from ny to europe via delta or to transfer
when online it says non transferable, and there is a $275 cancellation fee
well something came up and my friend and his wife cant go, not cuz sickness or death.

Can't you just cancel and get a credit with delta?

well they will charge 275 cancellation fee. he is looking to avoid that.
