Returning after points are posted

Let's say I sign up for a credit card which says I have to, for example, spend $1000 in the first 3 months. I do that and points get posted within a few months. Am I able to return those items after while still retaining points?

I'm assuming you mean the bonus points. Because the 1000 points (or whatever point per dollar ratio) for the $1000 spent will definitely be taken back.
