Lock installing apps + remove browser + add apps you need (possible rules: no games, no sports, no entertainment, etc.).
[Occasionally an app will have a built in browser/or need to access a certain website - just go back in to settings (with password) and add that website].
There is time restrictions and more features too.

As mentioned above, a full-featured router can be set to only allow the DNS server you choose . Another option is setting up a Windows account without administrator priveleges, which will not allow users to change the DNS settings.
Which router supports this??? I mean I can understand it being a wanted feature but I cannot understand how it would work...

edit: nvmd I take that back, after some google'ing, there apparently is a way to kinda accomplish it.

link pls?
It wasn't a specific guide or anything so I don't have a link. But basically what you would do is set a rule on the router that denies all outgoing traffic on port 53. Then add another rule that allows outbound traffic on port 53 but only when the destination is the OpenDNS address.

That still wouldn't stop one from using a DNS server with an alternate port or proxying the DNS query through an SSH tunnel or whatever, but it would definitely add a level of complexity with trying to get around the OpenDNS server.

I have recently installed Net Nanny and for the most part I find it to be pretty good. Only problem is that there are many kosher sites that are blocked too. I am sure most filters have the same problem. Is there a way to set it so that it doesn't happen?

No filter is foolproof I use K9 and am fully aware that it can be gotten around, if you are trying to get around a filter you will always be able to.

It's called reformating and you don't have to be a whiz

If the point of a filter is to to protect your kids than you will know if they are able to get around it or get rid of it because the reports will stop coming in so I there is not that much to worry about. Unless, there is a way to disable it temporarily.

Anyone can use a linux livecd/usb that will allow them to bypass the os entirely and won't touch it all so lock down the bios with a password.

The trick is to circumvent the filter without disabling it.

There are many ways to bypass it completely as pointed out above (live cd, formatting, sometimes even safe mode, etc)

Remove the internal battery, move the jumper next to it from position, turn on pc.
switch off, put the jumper and battery back on its place, and switch on.

about to buy webchaver for computer at office. anyone know of a deal?

i would rather use yishomoreini (which is better and free - i think sponsored) but apparently you need to be part of a community that already offers it.

any recommendations?
