What's the issue? It seems to be an easy way to make $$$, and all of it for a great cause.

Also in easy way to meet a minimum spend threshold. Who needs CVS anymore for MS!

I've heard that millions - many millions - of dollars have already been invested in this scam.

And now when Tomchei Shabbos' budget goes up, we'll understand.
When somebody thanks you for a favor you've done, respond "my pleasure", not "no problem".

I want to clarify that this Rosh Yeshiva didn't put this together. He seems to be a target as well.

Says who? He CLAiMS he invested 500k? Maybe he IS the scammer.  Forget that, maybe your friend is in cahoots with him.

Unfortuneately there are a whole bunch of yeshivos involved, i personally know two of the Rosh Yeshivos involved and while one of them is pretty young (low 40's) I believe that they are both chashuva wonderful honest people!

Before we cast stones at people, lets try and get some facts! There hasn't even been any actual scam (yet)!

Trying to get people to put a lot of their own money into what is at best a get-rich-quick scheme is a scam in and of itself. What you mean is that there hasn't yet been credit card fraud. A little patience, and that will come too.

I find that lately the Yeshivas are putting the boys to work. Even if in a totally legitimate way I.e. fundraising, cooking, cleaning etc. The parents are sending their children to yeshiva to learn Torah. They are paying tuition to a Yeshiva to look after them. Besides for Purim it is unacceptable to send boys out collecting. Maybe allow them to put up a cholent for Friday night, but to cook a whole Shabbos??

How much more so to involve them in something like this. What does it teach them? How will the Rosh explain when everyone is in 25K debt due to this scam?

Easy. Either it was a G'zairah min Hashomayim or Hester Panim.

The whole "make money for your shul" business, while it may not be an actual scam, is along the same lines and it doesn't strike me as proper either.... Take an unsuspecting guys personal info and mess around with it all in the name of Tzedakah?!

Our generation is easy prey. We're all looking to make it without puting in the work.

Sadly this shortcut mentality seeems to be coming from those we entrust and pay to teach our children.

The famous thief behind this scam (http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=3910.0) should be kicked out of our community and the RY involved should be named and shamed.

This should be taught in First grade in every school before ABC: In every scam the first few mil is paid, everyone after that is on Tomchei Shabbos.
