Mobile as replacement for home phone/internet
« on: June 25, 2019, 01:08:30 PM »
As my Optimum bills have crept up and up, and no real alternative yet at my address, I've been toying with the idea of moving the home service to another cellular line (at least until some competition comes to my block with FIOS).

I can get an unlimited calling and internet on a multi-line plan for $25/month.

Would appreciate if anyone has experience to share on using a SIM for home voice and internet service.
I've been waiting over 5 years with bated breath for someone to say that!

The hotspot wont work to fast on a computer.
Its many times slower than a wire.
I'm not who you think I am.

You can get totally unlimited or it's like 50gb then deprioritized?
My Tapatalk notifications don't always work.

Home internet use is mostly email and whatsapp. On occasion will do some work on Google Sheets or Google Docs, or possibly log into remote computer with TeamViewer.

Deprioritized, but for my use I really don't see why it should matter.

Can you quote numbers? Willing to play the cancel game and resign up in a spouses name? Also if you cancel and let it sit for a month they usually will start offering you better deals. I actually once had a call from a retention specialist who his entire job was calling back customers who actually canceled and offering them better deals.

It's currently a business account, they're not really offering retention deals there. I got them to lower it a drop, but I really need to port my number (at least temporarily to something else) and then sign up as residential (if I want to stay with Optimum).

I mean if you want, do a trial run with a prepaid plan and see if it's doable. Get a cordless phone that connects to cell phones with Bluetooth and get a cooling pad for the phone itself.

To me personally I find such an idea slightly extreme but if it works it works.

No. I wasn't thinking of using a cell phone, rather a router that accepts a SIM and/or mobile phone gateway. Not sure if there's a device that will accomplish both (i.e. give a dialtone for regular calling and provide ip connectivity to a router), and I was thinking prepaid.

I use an older iPhone as my home phone , it connects via bluetooth to Panasonic cordless phone. I have data shut off on the phone.
Doesn't need any cooling pad.
I charge it every 2 or 3 days depending on usage.
Really just for the kids since most people dont call my home phone number.

I'm not sure if a sim that has voice and data will work properly in a router or hotspot device. Usually needs a special hotspot plan etc...

I dont use laptop at home so just an android is adequate for my web usage.
