I need Electric Help... Any electricians out there?
« on: May 29, 2014, 04:02:17 PM »
I would like to put an outlet 3ft above above a back burner is it an issue?

Will the plugs get ruined from heat or steam? (dosent get very hot)

Disclaimer - I am not an electrician,  but I do have some electrical knowledge and much experience in LV.

The outlet itself should not be an issue, but what appliance ate you plugging in to it?  Also, there should be some distance (horizontally) from the wall to the burner, no,

in many houses there are microwaves on top of burners.
I don't see why you should have a issue.

Okay I'm feeling accomplished I put the outlet and its working! If it explodes I'll let you know. :)
I don't think it will be a problem but it was my first time working with electricity and I was nervous.

One more question
If I put an outlet on a switch how do I wire it I cut off the positive?

Yes, the switch should cut off the positive (black) wire.

Also, the outlet should probably be GFCI protected.

I know I could google it but... What is GFCI
Ground Fault Circut Interrupt.
It shuts iff power if it detects a problem (overload, water, etc).

Did you run the wire from another outlet in the kitchen? If so, it might already be protected. If there's a GFCI outlet in the kitchen already, try pressing the test button on that outlet and see if you lose power on the new outlet. You might also have a GFCI breaker for all the outlets in your kitchen. If not, then you can just buy a GFCI outlet.
3ft above the range seems like it could easily have liquid splashing up from a pot. It's probably also the code requirement, but you should just do it for safety.

Make sure also that the wiring you used matched the Circut Breaker.
Here is a link that i just googled. This is very important.

I sure hope it won't splash 3 feet high! My main concern was the steam and heat and I think that it won't be a problem.
Thanks for your help I enjoy every last bit of help.

In the middle of the night my wife heard a strange buzzing sound...
Woke up in the morning and six individual breakers were tripped.
What happened?
What does this mean? Should I call electrician?
Thanks!

Going away for YT...

Spoke to two electricians, both said it is very strange and they don't even have a working theory.. (I'm thinking a UFO flew over the house!)
The consensus was that since it only happened once we should just monitor it....

If you spoke to a professional, then take their advice.  I was worried about a fire or even just all the electricity going out. Maybe a mouse ate some wires.

Is this product a figment of my imagination or has anyone actually manufactured a GFCI receptacle with the prongs facing this way? (I could really use something like this because I have to plug in two appliances that both have right angle plugs, so they would bump into each other if plugged into a regular GFCI.)
