A while back Lakewood compiled a listing of dangerous roads to cross in an effort to show why courtesy bussing is needed. It does not make the courtesy bussing any more mandatory, it was just a justification.

Dude, my kids in primary! He's supposed to walk
You probably don't realize how pathetic this is.
No, you're supposed to drive your kid. It's not that far. And if both you and your wife are both already at work at the time that your primary kid needs to be taken to school then (to paraphrase an earlier poster) you probably don't realize how pathetic that is.

Actually, you're wrong. The idea behind cutting courtesy busing is that kids who live close enough to school can safely walk to school themselves, not that parents who live close enough to school have to drive their kids instead of getting busing
ETA: and nice judgmental bit thrown in there about people who work jobs at normal hours, not what I would call pathetic
Don't ask stupid questions and you won't get stupid answers

Dude, my kids in primary! He's supposed to walk 1.5 miles to school and back along and across central and and Madison.
You probably don't realize how pathetic this is.
The 1.5 miles is ridiculous. But if there will be kids walking, Madison and Central will have crossing guards.

What's pathetic?
I don't think anyone is saying that it's safe for a 6 year old to walk 1.5 miles.
But no one is forcing your kid to walk to school.

It boils down to whether you should pay for kids bussing or if everyone else should pay for it.

Exactly. It's one thing if they said that people who live 1/2 a mile away should walk. But to say that 1.5 need to walk or carpool (or parent pays bussing) and 2 gets bussing is kind of silly.

It boils down to the fact that there shouldn't be a distinction between courtesy bussing and mandatory.

I think they would do nothing if it were not mandated. Of course the 2 mile limit is arbitrary.

BTW,  the letter from the boe basically implies that primary kids are to walk 1.9 miles. They talk about crossing guards etc.
