Aliyah/ Living in israel questions
« on: July 10, 2014, 12:01:29 PM »
I know a bunch of people here either currently live in Israel or have in the past. Just had some questions, thought maybe could get some feed back here. I'm moving there next month and sending a lift soon so trying decide about certain things whether to bring or not. for now (gota decide soon on these): american laundry machines and ceiling fans- anyone have personal experience and care to share whether these things were worth bringing from here (ny area)?

If it's not a big hassle I would say bring American laundry machines, the ones here are much smaller. They have ceiling fans here ost Israeli's don't even have A/C

Most everything you can buy in E-Y, especially this time of year with so many Americans going home before Elul.  People sell out entire apartments if you want to buy (often excellent condition from young couples) used American goods.

Check out Janglo which is Jerusalem's 'Craig List' for English speakers to see if the kind of stuff you want to bring is there and for how much.
Infinitesimally cheaper, but you need to pick up.  Will you have a car?

ETA Now if you could fit a WM with a working BB machine in your lift, then we're talkin'.

BB?
Oy.  I guess it's dangerous to put BB machine and Israel together in the same sentence.
(BB is not a gun.)  You can look up Bluebird.

any things you can think of that maybe most people wouldn't think about but would be very useful to have there/ would be much more expensive to buy there?

8 1/2 x 11 spiral notebooks (that are on sale at Staples for 17 cents this week) or binders, paper (essentially free in the US), and sheet protectors  (plus back to school weeks are coming up).  They use A4, 8 x 14(?),  which don't fit into most bookshelves!!

Unless you already own something, especially if it is expensive, or decide to DD it, most everything will turn out cheaper in Israel than buying in US and shipping.

IINM I think the modem you get for free with your internet service has a router built into it.  You either have BEZEQ or HOT for the tashtit and then any number of carriers for the service.  ORANGE is 972-74-707-3100.  It used to be x1-1-3-2 for a live person.
