Just tried it tonight, I went 20 miles after the gauge was on the red line (not after the light went on, which is before the gauge reaches the red line)

When I filled up, my 18 gal. tank took only 17.5 so I could've gone longer...

2011 Accord. There's nothing wrong with the mileage counter, it's simple, the gauge reaches the red line before the tank is empty.
I believe they made it that way to avoid people getting stuck.

Hah,  and I did run out of gas on Monday afternoon... Honda Odyssey, approximately 50 miles....
I was on the exit ramp going to the cheap gas station....

Walked over to the gas station, and was back driving in 20 minutes

I once went 70 miles with Sienna on empty, then at rest stop I davened first and then went to fill gas - I had to walk to get the gas... Another time I had an old american car with a quarter of a tank left, but I parked on a large incline and car wouldn't start until I added gas... So I ran out twice in 17 years, but have gone over 70 miles on empty multiple times...

Let's also imagine that "empty" is an imprecise measure.  Do we mean when the needle first touches empty? Or when it solidly overlaps empty? Or when it reaches a point where it ceases to go down further?

I'll check the regs.
