$75 fee:

-21+ days prior to departure is based on the departing city time zone, not the booking city time zone.

EDIT: I managed to call in and have them waive the fee when it was within 21 days in departing city time zone but not by booking city time zone

UPDATE: AA has removed all close-in fees

I'm hoping to fly AUH-SYD EY F but there's no F availability right now, and if nothing shows up before 3/22 the award price goes up dramatically.

If I tack on a flight to CNS, and book AUH-MEL-CNS which is available in F at the current rate, if SYD becomes available I could switch without a change fee?

Or is there an easier way to lock in the current pricing?

Yes. If you still will be ending in CNS

I'd have to rearrange my itinerary to do Cairns/PD first instead of Sydney, but I guess I may not have a choice.
Even if I don't want to take the last leg, you think the bags get checked straight through?

Also in a dilemma because I need 4 seats, and only 2 seem to be released at a time. Closest thing I can think of is booking through MEL where there are at least two flights a day which each have two, and then switching if availability shows up...

Long connection in SYD so you can have your bags only checked to SYD and not CNS.

Gotchya- how long? > 6 hours?

Also Aa language is If you change your outbound award travel date to within 21 days of the original booking date, a $75 award processing fee will apply, provided the new date is valid for the original award type claimed

So let's say I book March 1st for travel May 15th, even if I change the date to May 14th the day before there shouldn't be a $75 fee, correct?

Best is an overnight connection.

Incorrect

Didn't seem right according to what I had read elsewhere - so why does that incur a charge? "21 days of original book date" refers to the original date of departure?

If you change to a flight that's with in 21 days, it'll incur a $75 fee, unless it's already been paid.

I've asked this question too many times already and responses are very conflicting.

1) I book today for May 1st.
2) On April 1st I move the ticket forward to April 15th.
The new ticket is >21 from the original booking (today) but <21 from the date on which it was changed (April 1st).
Will the $75 fee incur?

IME it is accurate, and for those that didn't get charged recently, it's what we call "an exception".

Pretty certain the rule is that one only gets charged expedite fee when it's within 21 days of the *original* booking date.

The trick that works for United doesnt work with AA, I remember ilherman once posting about this in maybe the United thread or somewhere. They will charge at check in or so

In addition, I dont know if forum rules allow to post FT links but on FT its clearly discussed numerous times

This isn't re the trick. This is a legitimate change not within 21 days from the original booking.
