$75 fee:

-21+ days prior to departure is based on the departing city time zone, not the booking city time zone.

EDIT: I managed to call in and have them waive the fee when it was within 21 days in departing city time zone but not by booking city time zone

UPDATE: AA has removed all close-in fees

I am trying to change TLV-AMM-DOH-SIN TO TLV-HKG-SIN and the phone rep told me that since I will be routing through Asia instead of Sub Indian, it is considered a different award type and I have to redeposit the miles.

Anyone heard of this?

Yes. Read the next 5 or 6 posts from here:

Let's clear it up.

Changing from AMM-AUH-SYD in J to F = no change fee (upgrading class of service).
Changing AMM-AUH-SYD to AUH-SYD = no change fee (dropping segment in same region, same award type, same mileage).

Combining the above, changing AMM-AUH-SYD in J to AUH-SYD in F = no change fee. (One could theoretically also change AMM-AUH-SYD-CNS in J to AUH-SYD-CNS in F and then change that to AUH-MEL-CNS and then change that to AUH-MEL, all without fee.)

Changing AUH-SYD to DXB-SYD = change fee (changing origin and changing award type).
Changing LHR-DXB-SYD to DXB-SYD = change fee (changing award type and mileage requirements).

I read it and still don't get it: Is the problem switching from RJ/QF to CX or does it really make a difference where I route through?

Why should the latter matter when it is the same class of service and same amount of award miles?

Because it's AA with its archaic rules.

Update: The first rep I spoke to claimed I would have to cancel the first ticket, redeposit the miles and book a new flight. I HUCA'd and got a different rep that told me that there won't be a redepositing fee but they will have to charge the $75 close in fee for the new tickets. I pleaded my case etc' etc' and he ended up speaking to a supervisor that waived the fee.

All's well that ends well but I still very much want to know what exactly the issue was since I want to book a "placeholder" flight for the return with the hope that CX will open and I will be able to change the flight.

Another AA award question: If I book an award now, and change the carrier within 21 days of the flight will I be charged a close in fee?

Thanks.

When searching for an award on AA.com if I use the mobile site it only shows me AA flights but when I use the full site it shows me all BA flights as well.
Is it always like that?

Will try this in this thread instead of the random question thread. Does AA treat LGA, JFK and EWR as the same airport for "Origin and destination" purposes?

I know that by DL some agents do and some don't (not hard coded).

Asking about AA in the AA Award thread, for a reason.

Not for award changes or same day flight changes.
