JJ1000's list of top restaurants and dishes in Miami:

1. Backyard BBQ (New chef in mid 2017 totally new menu): Burnt ends, 2nd cut brisket, Dinosaur Rib, BBQ Sundae, BBQ Burger.

2. 26: Sushi pizza is  a must I prefer it with baked salmon, then the Passion Mojito, Sushi Teriyaki tempuraed, Cilantro Aioli dip and truffle fires, all of their soups are good. Miso Bass is incredible as well.

3. Harbour Bistro, new menus in early 2018: Chicken and waffles just perfect, duck a l'orange pot stickers, millionaire ramen, lamb shank, charcuterie platter if that's your thing... Also serving brunch, Chicken and waffles again, eggs Benedict with bacon on top,

4. Fuego: Flatbreads are a must, then the back ribs, pastrami egg rolls, smores dessert, perfect date drink are good. (Update March 2017, the app chef and bbq chef isn't there anymore and the quality has been spotty from recent reviews.)

5. Zak The Baker. Menu changes too often to recommend stuff. Not Cholov Yisroel.

6. Kosh: Chocolate souffle and korean beef with extra sauce are good.

7. Rustiko: Spinach and Artichoke Dip, (Quinoa Salad is very good), (Pappardelle Mushroom if lunch), Mushrooms Panzerotti is an absolute must order only down side is it's a dinner only item. Oreo cheescake dessert but make sure it's fresh.

8. Harbour Grill: The Harbour Grill Filet or TheKing Reserve steaks are great. Supreme Burger is very good as well.

9. Pizza type options:

Foozo: Foozolis, the caprese foozoli with extra balsamic sauce and garlic aoili, their pastas are good as well.

Jerusalem Pizza: Best plain pie, get it fresh in store, coated fries good as well.

Lenny's pizza: Gan Eden Pie.

Also notable unique places are The Freeze which makes ices, serendipity makes ice cream (there is one next door to ZTB now), and Miami Beach Chocolates turtles and bark now also in Surfside!

Any recommendations for a hotel in Miami, August 12-14?  I'm leaning towards the Four Points; the reviews make it seem like it's nicely renovated.  I would use my SPG for that, although I would prefer to get rid of my TY points, but everything on TY's website is twice the price.

Sheraton MIA and Sheraton Suites Cypress Park are good cheap redemption options. Sheraton mia is newer and Cyprus park is fancier but dated

I should've mentioned, we're looking for a hotel on the beach.  Thanks.

Why MIA and not FLL?

We like the easy accessibility to Kosher food.  Although we'll have a car, so if there's a good option in FLL I'd take it.  We're flying into FLL (via the two RR cards, thanks, Dan!).  The wife wants on the beach and a pool.  I prefer to use SPG or TY points.  I'm saving my UR and MR for a different trip.

I was thinking that after reading your trip reports, but it just seems so far from the main eateries.  Will probably book it anyway.  Thanks!

Love that hotel and its accessibility to all of the kosher restaurants and markets (with a car).

I ended up booking the Westin Diplomat with Thank You points (41k vs. 24k spg).  I also just upgraded my AmEx BRG to Platinum.  Can I use my new Gold SPG status for a possible upgrade and free wifi even though I booked through a 3rd party?

You can try, but typically IMHO they dont give you as much if you book through 3rd party.

Yeah, I just chatted with an SPG rep and he confirmed that.  He also said I could try asking on check-in, but I'm not optimistic.  Thanks.

I'm at the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood right now (based on Dan's recommendation), and it's great!  15-20 minutes from FLL, right on the beach, nice rooms, close"ish" to enough places to eat, etc.

I was thinking of that place. i know the area as ive stayed in sunny isles many times. go to aventura , there are alot of good restaurants there.

How is the pool beach area? that is important to me. and is the hotel really full?

I'll take some pics and try to post them tomorrow.  There are two pool areas, one is kind of on a bridge over the other one.  Neither is crazy packed, with plenty of open chairs in the sun or the shade.  Same with the beach.  The hotel is busy, but not crazy.  I walked right up to the elite check-in counter and they honored my SPG Gold without me asking, even though I booked with Thank You points.

I'm re-reading Dan's reports now to decide where we should go for dinner.  We stopped at Pita Plus on the way from the airport; it was alright.

My wife takes pictures of everything, it won't take much to upload em.  We're probably doing one of those two places, unless the wife wants dairy.  Weather is a little warmer than Baltimore, and not much more humid either.  In short, better than I anticipated.
