1) I prefer summer too but who am I to complain when I get 3 award nights at a cat 6 
2) If the second registered guest is a platinum, will they get platinum benefits?
1) It's still spending $900+ for 3 nights (and some of us have "Yeshiva Week" off instead of Dec./Jan 1)
2) Yes, they get the plat benefits: i.e. if the SPG acct holder is platinum and I book the second guest on my platinum acct., then the guest gets those ammenites,
(4:00 check-out, upgraded suite, sometimes food/Club lounge, etc...) and as the account holder, I can get the 500 bonus Starpoints
(unless the guest chooses the "welcome drink" ammenity, which is what my brother did when we gifted them an anniversary hotel suite
