Project Management Software
« on: October 26, 2014, 11:12:16 PM »
Looking for recommendations on a good project management tool. My needs are as follows.

must have unlimited projects.
Assign tasks to teams and/or individuates with deadlines and means of progress reports and follow up.
Have spaces for discussing ideas.
Admin role wherein I can control who see's what and whether they can edit or not.
File sharing. Preferably integrates with skydrive or is hosted on the site.
outlook integration.

I am coming to terms with the fact that no one offers collaborative document editing like Google.

Thanks in advance for your feedback. Please include why you chose the specific tool.

I like Asana. But I don't use all the features on your list, so not sure if it'll work for you.

Using Asana for a few years now and very happy. I believe it does everything you listed. It integrates with dropbox for file sharing. Also integrates with Harvest for time tracking if that's something you need.

I'm an admin and am pretty sure that you can assign which user can see which projects. But ask someone with more experience - I've been using asana where everyone involved can see everything.

has it improved your work flow?
We seem to have trouble finishing projects we start and I'm hoping to streamline and organize the operations using this tool.

Very much!!

it's much easier to keep each project/task's discussion in place, and assign tasks to different users. Much more organized than endless email threads.
The one hurdle I've had so far is getting users to keep checking asana for new tasks/updates. They will officially email you (if you desire) but for some reason (haven't looked into it) the emails haven't been so consistent.

The way I do it is I keep a pinned Firefox browser tab pointed at my "inbox" within Asana's web app. Asana's inbox is where you get notified re: any update/new task / comment for any project you're included in. Whenever something happens, the pinned tab lights up so I know to go check it.

Of course, if these are your employees, you can just require them to keep checking asana, and hope it works. :)

Good luck! I'm curious to know what app you end up using....

Jira is great.
What about Zoho? (or zoho project - https://www.zoho.com/projects/ )
Anyway, here's the top project-management software:

I've used many. My current favorite is TeamWork https://www.teamwork.com/. Checks off most of your boxes, but I'm not sure about an outlook integration. Its got a great notification system though.

Update: So I am checking out Redbooth.com for now. I chose to try it mainly b/c of of its privacy options even for individual tasks. And for the conversations section, I think it will be very useful for brainstorming and keeping ideas in one place.
Still figuring out how best to set it up since it doesn't use folders.

Salesforce is a CRM. More for contact (customer) management than for project management. There are addons/ways to configure it to do project management too, but unless you need the CRM aspects of Salesforce you're much much better off with something that's built for project management.

Plus, unless you're a nonprofit it's NOT free. Or cheap.
