Or if he got a job before the system started being controlled by seniority.
I believe it's always been that way...

I guess it's a long shot but are there any A&P mechanics on here I could ask a few questions to?

Why don't you ask and even if someone's not an A&P, they may know the answers?

Very true, this is why I recommended the ground school first. I try to get students to pass the written test first this way they could dedicate all their effort into flying. When you start simultaneously the flying tend to get ahead of the book knowledge, and it drags things along.

Would you recommend the same for instrument, commercial and further ratings? I got my PPL about 8 years ago, but haven't flown much since. Thinking of continuing my training through CFII and MEI. I'm actually in Israel for the next 11 months, so I can't do any flying, would it be worth it to do a ground course like King schools?

Also, are they any decent paid pilot opportunities for someone who is Shomer Shabbos? I know airlines are unlikely, unless the pilot shortage becomes reality. Maybe commercial or charter, or am I going to be limited to instructing?

TIA

I would absolutely recommend doing  the ground school for the instrument and commercial pilot exams. Those two exams a heavy in theory and there's a lot to learn, being you're in Israel for the next year it would be very easy for you to take the time and learn the material. There are jobs for frum people but not very easy to find. Not impossible, I guess it helps who you know. As with any flying jobs (besides instructing) you are going to need to have some hours. And now with the new regulations requiring an airline transport pilot certificate for commercial flying ops that is another obstacle. I have not researched the new regulations  extensively, for example commercial operations not requiring two airline transport pilots but one airline transport pilot and one commercial pilot.

Hey it's only fair. I lost a few weeks of productivity back when someone else pointed me to it, now it's your turn... ;D

Thanks, I think I'm going to do that!

I haven't gotten my instrument yet but I did take a couple of hours of instrument ground school a few years ago just to get my feet wet. My instructor (who has been my instructor pretty much since I started flying) said that you can really hone your skills by simply practicing on a PC flight simulator. This makes sense since you already know how to fly the plane. You are working on the skills that involve using instruments which can be done quite accurately on a PC. So i would also recommend that while you hit the books, you should try to get your hands on a flight simulator (even an old version of MS Flight Simulator). Also get a semi-decent joystick with a twist rudder and a throttle control. Shouldn't be more than 20-30 bux for that.

Excellent suggestion, a flight simulator will work wonders in learning to fly instruments.

Which one do you recommend as being the most realistic?

Yeah and it's cheap!! No need to spend tons of money on renting or operating a real plane. Just spend a couple bux now and use it whenever you want for free!!

Microsoft Flight Simulator should work well. a nice feature is you could actually loading the actual weather that's occurring at a certain airport
