Driving s/o elses rented car
« on: November 19, 2014, 11:33:39 AM »
Hi,

I'm 22 years old & my Mom has a car rented from enterprise. I want to drive it to Canada for the weekend... I called enterprise to ask about adding an additional driver & they said they cannot add me since the vehicle is a small SUV (mazda 5).

What are the risks in driving a rental car without being on the rental agreement as an additional driver?

Your ideas would be appreciated!

The better question would be if Enterprise allows this car to be driven to Canada.

Don't do it. You are asking for huge liability issues.

I don't care if enterprise lets Canada. The drive to Canada is mostly in NY.

The question is if I should try to go to branch & put myself as an additional or not even to bother...  And what are the issues if I drive this car without being an additional driver...

Should I try to go to branch? Is there any workaround?

You can go to a branch, they wil probably require you o take a different car and charge you an underage fee of something like $15 a day. But you should also make sure they allow driving it to canada. If they dont and you get into an accident in Canada you may be liable for all the damage.

Using Corporate# XVC7220 there should be no issue adding as additional driver...

that would require making a new reservation.

What are the risks in driving a rental car without being on the rental agreement as an additional driver?
the contract will be void, and no insurance will cover you. (not the rental agency nor the credit card)
also, the primary driver could get black listed for allowing an unauthorized driver to use the car.

Good luck taking a rental car across the border without your name on the contract. You'll get arrested for what's essentially a stolen vehicle.

at the border they usually ask to see your rental agreement.
going into the USA they always (almost) asked me for it, into Canada I think that not always.

I once heard a story of someone who mistakenly gave an old agreement that was lying around in the car (instead of his own) and they took him in for questioning, till they clarified the mistake.

Are you generally allowed to take a rental into Canada?

they usually ask whose car it is, (maybe because of commercial plates?) at least when entering USA
