Need help/advice with Car Rental in northern California
« on: January 17, 2011, 12:35:32 AM »
Hey guys-
Going to be in Northern California (SF/Palo Alto/Bay Area) to visit family from the 20th to the 30th.
I wasn't originally going to rent a vehicle, but I found some special promotion being offered through JetBlue's trueblue program, so I decided to just try and price out a vehicle for the entire duration. It would be nice to have our own car (since we are 2 adults and 3 kids, we can easily take up an entire car by ourselves!).

I got quoted $197.99 (before taxes + fees) for a full sized vehicle during the entire duration of the trip. That doesn't sound too  bad to me, but then again I've never rented a vehicle for more than 3 days before. Thing is, I'd really like a minivan for at least part of the trip, since my in-laws want to go somewhere overnight with us (and taking 2 cars is just silly).
Renting a minivan for the entire trip is VERY expensive, however!
Once, I remember renting a compact car in Florida and being bumped up to a minivan for free. But I can't rely on that happening, can I? Are there any tricks to getting a free bump up to something like that? Or, at the very least, can I drive back to the rental place and trade up for a minivan for a day, then back down to the full size and just pay the difference for that day?

Open to any and all suggestions...

the only thing i can recommend is that instead of budget, go with enterprise (which is anyways cheaper) and negotiate with them a price to upgrade to minivan. i know in jfk they can be quite flexible
