I don't know, haven't used it. I'm sure thumbnails are viewable online, but not sure about a mapped drive.

I've also had some issues with SkyDrive to the point where I'm scared to use it.

Kindly elaborate: Did stuff disappear? Were you able to recover it? How long ago was this?

i use a program called gladinet to sync to google docs. its a free program which adds the online storage (google docs) as a network hard drive on your computer, so i save everything directly there. you don't need to convert any files to google docs format.
They have a paid option with folder mirroring, unlimited transfers (free is limited to like 1000 files per action or something) etc, but i find this perfect for my use. never noticed it hogging resources, if it doesnt work for some reason it might hog bandwidth for an upload, but u can just push that off. once in a while i've needed to check their site for troublshooting, but its pretty good.
It works with just about every online storage i think, but i wouldnt trust microsoft. or better yet, why not upload to more than 1? u can probably add more than one google account too to get extra security, and remember, google has unlimited storage for docs in google docs format

and @asher - thanks, now i know how to link ;) i should bookmark this page

Isn't GoogleDocs limited?

You're welcome! Who needs bookmarking? It's easy as pie.

Quote
You'll have 1 GB of free storage for files you don't convert into one of the Google Docs formats (i.e. Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentations)

i actually havent been using gladinet lately as i've moved pretty much strictly to google docs for editing as well, so no need, and i just havent needed to backup anything i guess

so now i realized it hasent really done any uploading/downloading in about a month. and i cant figure out how to make it work. i tried remounting, wont work. i'm stumped ???

I wonder f your kinda setup violates the gDocs T&Cs... Before they allowed uploading of any file, there was a hack called gDrive that mounted your gmail storage as a drive, but it was a blatant violation of gMail T&Cs and every day you were risking getting shut down by Google and losing your data.

Not too long ago. First I had some stuff disappear and reappear, then I got locked out. Too much hassle for me...

For very plain excel and other docs you are ok with google docs. As soon as it gets a little more complicated then that, it will lose its functionality, as I experienced first hand...

I had an excel that I configured to calculate by inputting bookmakers odds, how to always make a profit.

It was a beautiful piece of work, and now its worthless, both the calculations as well as layout are gone...

are u saying you have a formula that i could make money in a foolproof way?

by the way, it doesnt stop at backing up your computer. what about your online storage? have u seen the horror stories online about people who've lost stuff. i've been trying to figure out the best way to backup my entire google account, i have pretty much gotten enough down:

1. http://www.dataliberation.org/
i believe its a google created site, it will guide u through a lot of stuff

2. have all your email forwarded to a google apps account.
that way u have a backup already, plus google has a little program to export and import mail between google apps accounts. its called google email uploader, you should be able to find it

3. i know gladinet has an option to transfer from cloud to cloud, never used it yet

4. share all your docs with another account and make a copy (with one click)

5. can this be done nicely for gmail through outlook?

If you want to backup your online accounts I would use Backupify It backs up Google, Twitter Facebook and many others.

In the process of switching over from Mozait and switchy.

I found this program called CrashPlan. Aside from the fact they have unlimited backup plans for under $50 a year, the program has a free feature that allows you to backup onto a "friend's" computer. So basically 2 ppl can arrange to swap backup space, and it's all free. It sounds like the data is encrypted on the "friend's" computer, but I haven't tested it out yet. Still in middle of the inagural 250+GB upload (this is where FIOS comes in handy. I'm hitting about 10Mbps)

That's gotta be a fluke, no? What plan are you on?

Dunno, regular. It's been doing 3-10 Mbps most of the time, but this morning it was sustaining 80-90 for a while until I started using the system
