CrashPlan is great for those who don't know alot about what their doing and want something simple and easy (and its free if you backup to a friend).

I personally use an encrypted filesystem within DropBox to store my documents, which I take an duplicity backup of hourly to a backup server.

For photos, I back them up to a backup server everytime I'm on good internet. Right now I travel all the time so I don't have a desktop, but ultimately the photos will be stored on the desktop and backed up to my home fileserver with rsync.

My music is currently all stored on a droboS, which provides a layer of redundancy (but is super slow - but fine for music).

If you don't have a fileserver at home, or an extra machine to push backups to, amazon's cloud storage makes a great alternative (I even use duplicity to push backups there for many of my servers).

So my recommendations
- CrashPlan
- Rsync
- Duplicity (makes incremental, encrypted, offsite backups)

I use Carbonite, and unfortunately I had to make use of it recently when my Harddrive crashed. I will say it worked great, and restored within about a day. Only downside I found to it was that if the computer went to sleep or turned off you had to restart the backup from the beginning.

How much data? What internet connection?

I too use Carbonite at work, and I've got over 100gigs backed up.

Just as a datapoint, I use CrashPlan to help out with friends and family who don't know anything about computers. I have about 5 different people backing up to one of my servers.

CrashPlan first encrypts and compresses everything to speed up the backups and to make it so that whomever's computer you are backing up to isn't able to view your files.

Some of the users who backup to one of my machines have just a bunch of text documents, but others have 250GB+ of photos, that backups run quickly, are highly configureable, and restoring is easy.

It is also free to backup to a local USB disk.

Its free unless you want to backup to their servers (just backup to a friend in trade for letting that friend backup to you).

Runs on mac, PC, linux, solaris....

+1 to CrashPlan and the local encryption so that CrashPlan cannot see your data, dunno if the others offer that.

I got in on the free year for "current" Carbonite users. It took a while to do the initial backup, although it seemed like it was having trouble with a VirtualBox image so that might have been it.

The Android app has been quite handy for when I needed to retrieve a file that was outside my Dropbox folder.

Even backing up to their servers is pretty cheap if you think long term.
The four year unlimited option (for one computer) is $140.
Last year around the December Season, they had 20% discounts. Even though it didn't apply to the four year subscription, I called in and asked if they could apply the discount to that plan, and they did it for me. So it was $112 for four years, unlimited backup. I imagine this could be replicated again in a month or so.

Apparently not that much, 41 gigs :-)  I use road runner, speedtest.com just gave me a download speed of 17.7 mbps

Thanks! I just applied with your link even if I was not a Carbonite customer... I don't really need it since I have a Mac with Time Machine but I'll give it a shot in case both my mac and time machine crash!

We’re sorry.
At this time, the Carbonite Switcher offer is valid in the US only.

:(

Time for a proxy, eh?

I think he was talking about the crashplan offer.

Also its always free wth crashplan to backup to a friend, so let a friend backup to you and in exchange back up to them.

Which online backup should I use?
« Reply #92 on: January 01, 2013, 10:27:26 PM »
Asides from Carbonite, are there any other companies to consider that anyone here uses (if you can also explain why that over Carbonite that would be great)?

Thank you

You can find this topic already discussed and with input from the pro's here:

Personally I like backblaze, its unlimited and as long as my files are backed up I dont care how long it takes to recover them.

Another option to look into is amazon glacier they have some decent pricing.
It is all from Hashem and he will continue to give!

Is crashplan.com a reputable company?

Don’t see any ratings or Certificate Verifications for them like BBB, Cybertrust, TRUSTe or McAfee SECURE™ trustmark etc.
Airlines sending me "We're in this together" emails.

Bruh, where were you when my suitcase weighed it 51.50 pounds?

I've been using it successfully for years. The software is reliable, the backups are both encrypted and compressed, and I love the ability to backup to a friend. This way you can trade say 100GB with a friend, and keep a copy of your most important things on both their computer (fully encrypted of course) and yours.

I don't use their cloud service, or any of hte other services they offer for that matter, simply backup all important things to 2 different friends, and let them both backup to me in trade, and that way everybody has an extra copy of their data.

Its a great solution. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions about setting it up or anything, I'd be more than happy to help.
