UA now requires checkin and baggage check to be completed 75+ minutes in advance of UA154.
Show up T-74 and you will be denied per FT reports.

It seems this rule came into effect after our trip, but incredibly UA hasn't communicated the change to passengers booked on UA154.

ALOL @ the suggestion that UA will proactively email their customers. As if.

You'd be lucky to get an email prior to a flight being canceled. Proactive emails to all customers booked on UA 154? Never happening.

I'm considering it in late august as part of a MR to MNL. Looking at this: EWR-HNL-GUM(via hopper)-MNL;MNL-GUM-NRT-SFO-EWR

This may become the craziest travel week of my life! Trying to figure out if I have the guts to pull it off.

Agreed. However, since this will be a paid ticket for PQMs on a status match, it's only valid at the price if I go to MNL. With GUM only a stopover from HNL on my way to MNL, I'm struggling to find a way to get ROR into the itinerary.
