Starwoods
« on: September 14, 2008, 02:43:27 PM »
I was speaking with an Amex rep who told me that if I close down all my Starwood credit cards, I forfeit all my Starpoints.
I highly doubt they can do that as the points have already been sent to Starwoods and have no connection to Amex anymore.
Does any one know one way or the other?
Thanks

Its incorrect One has nothing to do with other. You may have a Starwood card and not an Amex. Try it call Starwood

She told me that since I was earning my starpoints only through an Amex card, if I canceled all my Starwood Amex cards, I would forfeit my Starpoints. As I said I highly doubt that, and I asked her for a copy of that in writing and she balked at giving it to me, she said I can find it in the fine print.

The SPG account is independent of the AMEX.
The rep has no idea what she is talking about.
Once the points are in the SPG account, they're there.

Are you talking  from experience? They told my sis-in-law the same thing, and sorry to doubt you,but there is A LOT at stake here:)

Call SPG direct and ask them to confirm and give it to you in writing if you are worried.

If you have a credit balance on your statement meaning you did more returns than purchases the CC company will usually send a negative amount to the FF program. I'm not positive about Starwoods but it certainly works that way with most Bank of America cards.

The only question as I see it is about bonus miles for hitting spending thresholds such as the $15k with Starwoods. If you return the goods, will the points be deducted? Even if they do, I believe you can transfer the points quickly from one Starwoods account to another. I can't imagine they can deduct points once already transferred. If this is the case, there are many ways to take advantage of these promos.

AMEX has zero ability to take back points from Starwood once deposited.
Pending points that aren't yet in your SPG account can be forfeited though.

I dont want to pay $45 a year for Starwood if I can get a free credit card. Is there any reason to sign up for the sign up bonus?

Sure, use it for a year for free, get the signup bonus, and see what you get out of it.
Forget about the high value of Starpoints, I get more than $45 out of the card just from the amazing return protection and warranty coverage.

You can return anything even stuff you used for 1 1/2 years? I thought only new or like new stuff can be returned

Funny you say that. I had the same thing. It was about 6 months after the 1 year dell warranty was up. The mouse had a small issue. Documentation needed was no biggy. Whole process took like 3-4 days. They refunded me completely and told me to keep the laptop which im still using ;D ;D

I think the misconception here is that what you did was NOT return it (at least i didn't). It was the 1 year additional warranty that you were taking advantage of. My dell had a 1 year warranty and my mouse went awry 6 months after the warranty was up.

The return policy is only 90 days...that is something else entirely.

besides with the Biz CC they have small rebates that usually amounts to more then $45. hertz 5% it might only be $2-4 per weekend rental but they do add up. Some Marriotts also 5% off etc etc

As long as you don't mind being banned by AMEX.
