Announced vs invited!
« on: August 24, 2015, 05:12:11 PM »
Someone care to explain?
You don't invite to a bris, so you found a workaround to invite to a DO....
Mazel Tov!
Looks to me like he "announced", not "invited".  Someone will explain the difference to CM.
I just found a new supply of forks!

It's a loophole.  You aren't supposed to invite people to a bris since rejecting an invitation is considered bad.  So people "announce" the bris so if you can't go, it's not considered rejecting the invitation...

Nope, specific to a bris.

I'm not sure why rejecting one invite is a greater sin than another.  Maybe one of the more learned people here can explain...

Eliyahu haNavi is at the bris. That's what's considered so egregious about rejecting the invitation.

Thanks Freddie. Doesn't he also "come" to the Seder? Are there the same rules around that?

Also, I find the whole Eliyahu story fascinating but I'm not so educated on it. What is the source for the belief that he is in attendance at a Bris?   Thanks!

To the door by "shfoch chamas'cha." Never heard an inyan of not inviting to a seder though... although on a related note... it is problematic to invite a nachri to any yom tov meal because of the issue of cooking beyond what is necessary for a Jew's yom tov celebration. On Shabbos, however, when you cannot cook anyway, there is no such problem.

IINM it only applies to the bris sudah, not the bris itself.

IINM, Eliyahu was penalized to attend every Bris (for saying בריתך עזבו). if he is forced to attend and a mortal has the liberty to ignore an invite...

that's the idea
