How can I avoid bed bugs in hotels

My wife is really worried about going to hotels because of bed bugs. Any tips?

supposedly you have to check around the top of the mattress under the lining of the ring that goes around the top     if you see black stuff... find another room.    if you google it you could get pretty good info on how to check for them.    they also say not to put your suitcase on the floor, put it on a table or something.
