Yes, and if it does so to me then all the more so that it will do so to blacks. Therefore their sensitivity is not being overly sensitive and means the right thing would be to remove them.

Y? You've acknowledged that for you its a new symbolism. Why would you assume that other ppl had the same arbitrary change on symbolism at the same time as you?

Just look around and you see it. Most of the population doesn't even understand any other part of the civilwar other than slavery.

I look around and I see adherents of a faux religion, jumping from inane cause to inane cause, using thuggery to attack anyone who doesn't believe in their causes, and this is their newest mitzva.

I don't need their religion, and I won't be cowed.

I don't care a whit if the Confederate stuff stays or goes, but I am not aware of any reasonable theory how they went to being symbols of slavery over the past 2 weeks.

For 8 years Obama could have taken down every once on federal land. Nobody cared. All of a sudden I'm a racist of I'm not shouting from the rooftops to take them down

They were saying it before Trump was president too. You are making a false absolute. I never wrote that someone who disagrees with me is a racist and definitely not that it needs to be shouted from the rooftops. Those who say that are showing that their entire opinion is insincere and is only to score political points. That some are using the issue for their own purposes does not change whether it is the right thing to take them down.

While I have serious issues with the SPLC, I think this article of theirs from April 2016 is reasonable.

OK, so a very small number of ppl thought it until 2 weeks ago, and now the same number of ppl think it, plus the crazies?

So how many ppl need to think it before it becomes objectively true?

I don't think it was such a small number of people only that it wasn't in the spotlight. The KKK march is what really put it into the spotlight just like the SPLC describes the way Dylan Roof sparked the debate then.

My understanding is that many on both the left and right feel it is a symbol of slavery. I think some of the supremacists are looking for exactly that. I can't say i really understand those who call it a symbol of heritage all that well. Even if it is their heritage it is not a part of it to commemorate. Liberal websites make a compelling enlargement that the construction of many of these monuments, but probably not all, seem to be specifically for their racial connotations.
