TBH I think it was a brilliant move.

1. China was pushing NK not to negotiate now in order to have leverage over Trump with the Trade deal. ( Which many claimed he was conceding because he needed China to Push NK )

Now that Trump walked away, they lost some of their leverage.

2. China wants a deal with NK almost as bad as the US...they won't let this opportunity slip away so quickly, meaning that instead of using NK as a negotiating tool against the US it now lays in their lap..

Trump didn't get played at all...as you mentioned, he got back 3 hostages, they officially destroyed their site ( which can be rebuilt, I agree ). And he showed the world that he's won't agree to any deal/show as Chuck Schumer claimed.

He won this Battle. The question now is trade with China...
