Yes, that's just the Staples company "line".  I had a store manager in Sothern California say the same thing to me earlier this week.  He told the employee, "Split up his purchases however he wants, just don't exceed $2,000.  Its a Federal Law"

Why would there be any issue? It's same as $200 but it's $300.
