Stranded on Easter Island...forever?
« on: February 18, 2011, 02:42:14 AM »
Long time reader first time poster... so I hope this is in the right place.

My wife and I are currently on a Round the World trip using One World RTW tickets. We are using redmeption miles for both of our tickets - my ticket is using AA miles her ticket is using BA miles.

We got word this week that LAN has canceled the flights that we had booked going from PPT-IPC (originally March 17) and then from IPC-SCL (originally March 20).

For the flight getting into Easter Island from Tahiti - both AA and BA put us on a flight for March 21. Annoying and expensive to stay in Tahiti for 6 extra nights!

The real problem is the next flight... as of today we do not have a flight leaving Easter Island at all! They are saying that there are no seats on any flight to Santiago until April 4th! And, no award seats at least through the end of April (thats as far as they checked). There is no rememdy yet as AA is trying to communicate with LAN.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle this? There is one potential solution that is a flight on March 27 to Lima then another flight from Lima to Santiago. But then they said that this flight is not permitted per the RTW rules (since we have another segment through Lima).

Any help at all on what to say to these people???

They cancelled the flight, you bought the ticket through them (paid with miles) They have to reroute you as soon as possible, even if it means traveling with a non-one world airline

Ah the joys of the OneWorld award.  The best and the worst of all awards.
I wish you the best of luck.  I can't even count the number of hours spent on the phone with AA over my last OW award. I was prepared to cancel my entire trip on many occasions due to AA being so inflexible about changes.
Keep trying is all I can tell you!

By the way are you planning on staying in PPT? Or going to Moorea? Bora Bora?
Bora Bora is a dream of mine...one day!

It's not just the $850 flight from PPT to BOB.
Overwater bungalow there is another $1,000++ a night.
And the flight to PPT isn't easy to find availability in premium classes either.

800 for two
850 for the dates that I randomly picked, should we quibble about that?

Nice to ignore the part about the OWB costing $1K a night.
And going on a long-haul flight in a cramped seat is my idea of a nightmare, not a dream...

For the record... we are going to Bora Bora for 3 nights in a OW bungalow. The BB Pearl was having a buy two nights get one free promotion.  But, now that we are "stuck" in Tahiti for 5 more nights I am thinking about taking the ferry over to Moorea - but I may need to go more budget for these un-budgeted for nights.

Do I have a right to demand that LAN pay for my accommodation for the extra nights they are forcing me to stay in Tahiti since they cancelled my flight?

Isn't the ferry to Moorea very long and still expensive?
How much were your OWB nights in BOB?
It's up to the ticketing carrier to make you whole at this point, keep calling AA and see what they can do.

I think the even bigger shocker is that you have 3 posts in all this time and still answered right away.
