Name Change On A Birth Certificate
« on: October 29, 2015, 08:07:36 PM »
Has anyone ever gone about changing a first name on a birth certificate, either for yourself or for a child ? I need to change it for a newborn & they're telling me because its a new name, as opposed to just a misspell, I'll need to go before a judge & get a court order first. Any other options ?  Thanks

The hospital (staten island university) told me that had I left it blank they could do it, but since it was filled in & I want to completely change it they don't do that.

They probably meant if you leave it blank. The first thing the hospital asked when I mentioned "birth certificate" was if I'm jewish. :)

Is it a completely different name?
I have experience where I wrote the first 3 letters and then forgot to finish the rest.  I managed to change it. It was a long
process but I managed.

What happened. Why do you want to change the name?

It was a given that I was gonna use one name so I filled it out in the hospital, as that's the simplest way (birth certificate & ss card). Then something came up & I couldn't use that name.

Maimonides. When we were filling it out, we weren't sure. She said "just come back and you can change..."

Many, many years ago a nurse changed the name on my spouses BC to the English equivalent. (She was Jewish and I guess thought it should be in English)  Had to go to court to get it officially changed back.

Its such a PITA. They gave me papers that I have to get notarized. Then I have to bring it back to civil court & they'll make a date that I have to appear before a judge. Then there's something about publications (no idea what he meant by that), then I'll get the court order. Then they'll make the change.

I never asked them to change... they only said they can (very possible they were full of it
