undoubtedly, something needs to be fixed. i'm not in the education department, and i don't know what exactly needs to be done. but i think it's possible that those who are in the education department, either don't know where to start, or are too scared to make any changes.

It's not only the boys system that needs changing. My sister-in-law has started going for her degree and it's extremely hard with a baby. She keeps on saying she wishes she hadn't gone on shlichus for her year after seminary before marraige and instead would have focused on a degree through a frum institute.

Yup. But note that this guys opinion doesn't represent our system. He's trying to make our system make sense.

I say writing to the editor is (at least) one way of making the issue get some more attention and bringing it onto the table.

So much pushback from folks in that thread against the 2nd year of sem.
Yet for boys it's OK that many (most?) waste 5 years of post-high school years in zal/shlichus/smicha and there's no push to do something different with the system?

Dont forget to include the cost of sending your son to an appropriately chassidish, and amply luxurious summer program each year. I just saw an ad for Yeshivas Kayits on the Big Island. It costs just $2450 + airfare for the 6 week program.

CGI Detroit is $3,950 for 6 weeks or $2,500 for 3.5 weeks...

When I was there, counselors were not paid at all....all that money must be going to resuscitate the Michigan economy :-). I think you will find that in general, programs for older kids are cheaper, as the competition is tighter, and older kids are frequently eligible to staff a program instead of pay as a participant. (with Detroit of course as an exception: They charge their waiters to work tables)

AFAIK Parksville also charges the waiters to come to camp. so many people want the job that I guess they can get away with it.

its that age group that they can either be a camper or staff, but the only kind of staff position they can get themselves into is waiter so if they wanna show 'look at me, I'm a staff member!' that's the price they've gotta pay. surprisingly, there are lines for these jobs...

But why only at Detroit? AFAIK all other camps allow the waiters to get tips and don't charge a cent. If that's still the case why would anyone pay to go to Detroit?
